How to Rent an Apartment in Russia:
First you can look on FlatMates.Ru for the people who also need a room. You can then pair up with them to rent an apartment together and split the costs.
Below you can see the average price of apartment rent (per month)
in major Russian cities: Moscow, St. Petersburg, Novosibirsk, Ekaterinburg,
Irkutsk and others. The data is valid as of September 2008.
The prices in this table are given
for an average (Soviet-style) apartment NOT in the city center. If
an apartment is located far from metro (more than 20 minutes by transport),
the price may go down about 30%, if it's in the center, then the
price will go up at least 30-50%. If the apartment was renovated,
then the price will go 30-50% further up. If the apartment is "western
standard" expect the price to double at least.
The apartment rent price is average
for September 2008, and the data is based on the open
information of the biggest Russian real-estate companies,
as well as private classifieds.
A room rental price in Russia is usually about 20-30% of the
montly rental price
of an apartment.
So, instead of renting a one-room apartment in Moscow for $1000 US per month
it
is much better to find 2 persons to share the costs and rent a 3-room apartment
together for $1500 (savings - $500 per month for each!). It is even better to
find
a
person
who already has an apartment and pay $300-500 for your room per month.
Also, finding a roommate will make it unnecessary to pay an agent's fee, which
is usually one month rent in Russia, so you'll save another $1000-$1500 US!
